David Tennant Wins Special Recognition At 2015's National Television Awards

Last night, David Tennant won the 'Special Recognition' trophy at 2015's National Television Awards and we really couldn't be happier for him!

Over the years, David has proved time and time again that he truly is an outstanding actor so it was very well deserved in our eyes. From playing the legendary lover Casanova to our favourite regeneration of The Doctor, David's incredible talent is extremely versatile and he always manages to master his roles every single time.

He may have once played the lord of time and space but even David didn't see this one coming; the Scottish actor looked genuinely surprised when his name was announced. The 'Special Recognition' title is arguably the most prestigious award at the whole ceremony so it's no wonder that David soon became quite emotional too.

Before receiving the accolade, a special video was shown on the big screen and it featured some of David's career highlights. Personal messages were also sent by David's father and some of his fellow workmates including: Billie Piper, Catherine Tate, Richard Wilson, Olivia Colman, Stephen Fry and Russell T Davies.

Known for being the Rose Tyler to his Doctor, fellow Doctor Who actress Billie Piper spoke about David's win and said the following: "He is a special actor and a decent human being. He's a very gifted person but he is able to be a human within that and I think that's what very strongly connects an audience with David."

Catherine Tate, who worked with David on Doctor Who and her very own comedy show, also left a message to acknowledge David's achievement. She explained: "He can be a clown, a statesman, a king and a pauper but more important than anything, as far as I'm concerned, he's really funny. David's always up for anything."

But what did the man himself have to say? Upon receiving the prize, David showed his upmost gratitude and said: "This is very an out of body experience. I grew up loving the telly so thank you. The fact I get to make part of my living by being on the telly is something I have to pinch myself about. To get prizes for it, it just doesn't compute."

"Anyone who's ever given me a shot, thank you very much. And anyone who's ever let me in to their living room on telly, it's a real privilege to get to do that so thanks. Seeing as he was on that film and didn't tell me, I would like to dedicate this to my dad. He's an inspiration and a role model so thanks Sandy and thank you everyone."

David Tennant is currently starring in the critcally acclaimed 'Broadchurch' and you can view a full list of his credentials here on IMDB. We particularly loved him in 'Fright Night' and he was delightfully creepy in 'Secret Smile'. David's amazing acting skills also landed him a role in Harry Potter and he's even walked the boards for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Company many times. At just 43, David should be very proud of himself.

A full list of this year's National Television Awards winners can be found here. As well as honouring TV talent, the ceremony also featured several guest performances. X Factor's Ben Haenow now sang his number one single 'Something I Need' and Pixie Lott put her very own spin on 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)' by The Proclaimers.

Here at OnePopz, we just want to send out our massive congratulations to David Tennant. He's a lovely guy and as well being our favourite incarnation of The Doctor, he'll genuinely always be one of our favourite actors too.

Are you glad David Tennant won this year's special award?
