Exclusive Interview: Magalie Reveals Who She’d Love To Share A ‘First Kiss’ With
This time last week, we had a date on the phone with pop's latest starlet Magalie. We found out how she's enjoying life as a new recording artist!
Magalie's debut single 'First Kiss' will be released next month and the official music video for the track has certainly been clocking up the views online. Despite only being uploaded less than two weeks ago, the video has already received over 200,000 hits. That's really impressive; especially as it's first ever single. After speaking to Magalie, we can tell you one thing: she's very bubbly and lovable. Her laugh is super infectious and if she appeared on The X Factor, Louis would definitely say that she has the 'likeability factor'.
In our exclusive interview, Magalie reveals whether she'd ever audition for a talent show and she tells us which celebrity she'd love to share a first kiss with. Check out Magalie’s answers to our questions below.
For people who haven’t yet heard ‘First Kiss’, how would you describe the song?
“Oh my god, how would I describe it? I would describe it as very upbeat and fun. There’s definitely kind of a slash of an old vibe. I wouldn’t say that it’s as current as something like Tinie Tempah. It’s got the type of sound that takes you back to something else… if that makes any sense. (laughs)”
You also wrote the song, do you think that’s important for your first single?
“It’s not something that I kind of like wanted to zone in on, it just kind of happened. I think that because it wasn’t planned, it kind of worked.”
How did you find shooting the music video for 'First Kiss'?
“It was my first video so it was really nerve-wracking because I had no idea what I was doing. I was just wondering where to look and what to do. I just thought ‘I’m gonna have fun with and see what happens.’ There was more than one camera and they kept waving saying ‘come this way, look this way, and this way’ and I was like huh? (laughs) It was fun. It was an erratic fun day. I'd definitely use the word erratic."
And it passed 100,000 views in under a week, congratulations.
“Thanks, I can’t believe it. I was just like ‘Really? No?!’ I had to check it out for myself and I was like oh my god.”
If you could have a ‘First Kiss’ with one celebrity, who would you choose?
“Oh wow, I didn’t know you was gonna say that to me. Who do I have a crush on? I have to ask myself. (laughs) Wait, who do I wanna say? I mean everybody loves Ryan Gosling, he’s cute but he’s taken… so it just wouldn’t work. I have to think of someone. I wouldn’t mind that guy, ohh God, what’s his name though? He’s so cute, I think his name’s Tom Hardy. He’s so hot, that’s the guy. He just looks like he’ll be really nice to give him a cup of tea.”
Is ‘First Kiss’ a good taste of what we can expect from your debut album?
“The thing is; I write a lot. I write for like everything. I could write forever as an artist so the range is quite broad but I dunno, I really like the ‘First Kiss’ kind of sound. So the album has been written but I think I really want to interact with fans that listen to the music and I really want to get their kind of opinions on which way it should go. We haven’t had a final discussion with the label but I want to get them involved and I want to see if they would like more of this kind of stuff because I have so much more of this kind of sound but I also have other genres."
"Like not genres, but other styles that have more guitar. I have like a few ballads and definitely think one is going to be a single. We just have to see which one cause obviously it’s music that I wrote for myself, that I always love to write, but it’s not just for myself. It’s for other people to listen to and appreciate; to feel good about it. I want to kind of enhance someone’s mood.”
Who would you say some of your musical inspirations are?
"This is the hardest question because it’s everyone, music is everywhere, it never stops. I really love people like Kate Bush and Prince, artists like Alanis Morissette and things like that. They definitely influenced me but then I also love things that are current so people like Bruno Mars; he’s just like amazing. Then you have people like Adele and she’s just ridiculously talented and she just gets it. I don’t want to write a ballad because she’s just written them all. Even though I’ve written a ballad, I wouldn’t want her to listen to it. She’d probably be like ‘what are you doing?!’ (laughs)”
And you’ve worked with some of the same people who’ve worked with Adele, One Direction and Robbie Williams. How’s that been?
"Yeah exactly, I have. It was a bit intimidating; this was before meeting them. Their names and the weight that they carry is really intimidating but when you’re in the studio and the vibe that you get when you’re in there; well it’s just another person and just another writer. We’re just cracking jokes, we’re just having a laugh and you kind of just forget. I’m sure the Queen could come in the studio and you’d be like ‘Oh my god, the Queen’s going to come in but then after like 10 minutes I’d be like do you want a cup of tea? Yeah, she’s cool her, she’s cool."
And Taio Cruz has also been a bit of a mentor, how did that come about and how’s he helped?
"Taio Cruz. You know what, I’ll be honest, he’s more of my friend than anything else but I think it’s better that way. Because I see him as a friend, it’s very organic. We’re very cool with each other. If he doesn’t like something then he’d be like ‘That could be better’ or ‘You could do this’ and I’m so chilled out with him. He’s just very cool."
A lot of singers now take the talent show route. Have you ever considered The X Factor or The Voice?
"I had a friend audition for The X Factor; she got really far actually. I don’t know why, for me, at the time it wasn’t the way for me. The answer’s ‘no’ on that but I could give you the long winded answer (laughs). It’s a no but not for the obvious reasons; it just wasn’t somewhere I was at the time. I felt like I had to work on my own things."
You also recently performed at Manchester Pride at Cruz 101, can we expect more gigs around the country soon?
"That was so much fun. I have on in the Hoxton area, I think it’s Hoxton Bar & Kitchen and that’s on the 19th September. I’m really looking forward to that and then I have some other dates."
What does the rest of the year have in store? Can we expect a second single?
"Oh definitely a second single, I’m pushing for that. (laughs) Then an album too. I’d hope by the end of the year; I’m honestly not sure but I think maybe by the end of the year."
Finally, if you could leave a message for everyone who’s supported you on your journey so far, what would it be?
“You’re like amazeballs. (laughs) It’s just like wow, I mean, I don’t even know. I don’t even know 400 people in my life so for over 100,000 people to have clicked and to listen and to be supporting… it’s just like crazy cool. It’s crazy cool, thank you so much. That’s what I’d say.”
'First Kiss' will be released on the 5th October and we really do hope that it does well in the charts for Magalie. She has a great voice, a great look, a great personality and a great song; what more could you ask for?
