All You Need To Know About The Latest Doctor Who – Was It The Right Choice?
Ever since Matt Smith announced that he’d be leaving Doctor Who, the one question that’s been on everyone’s minds is: ‘Who’ll be cast as the next Doctor?’
Well, ask no more, it was finally revealed who it’ll be last night in a special live programme broadcast on BBC One. The next Doctor will be played by...*drumroll*
Peter Capaldi.
At 55 years old, Peter is the oldest actor to be cast in the role since the show’s re-launch in 2005 so it’ll be interesting to see how new fans of the show react to an older Doctor.
Aside from Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi is well known for playing Malcolm Tucker in the BBC sitcom ‘The Thick of It’. His character Malcolm was famous for his foul language and aggressive behaviour but we’re pretty sure that Peter won’t be using the same language in Doctor Who. That certainly would be a different interpretation of the Time Lord.
Peter will be the twelfth actor to take on the role in the programme’s fifty year history and he'll take over from Matt Smith in the Christmas special this December. Peter was interviewed by Zoe Ball last night and he revealed that it's wonderful to not have to keep the secret any longer.
He said:“For a while I couldn’t tell my daughter who would be looking on the internet and discovering that people were saying so and so should be Doctor Who, and she was getting upset that no-one was mentioning me.”
Strangely, Peter has already appeared in both Doctor Who and its spin-off show Torchwood as two different characters. There’s been cases similar to this in the past but how are they going to explain that The Doctor himself looks exactly the same as two other characters in the Doctor Who universe? It’ll be interesting to see if that'll be explained.
Personally, we reckon The Doctor will put it down to ‘spatial genetic multiplicity.’ Some of you may remember that's how they explained Eve Myles being cast as Gwen Cooper in Torchwood after appearing in Doctor Who in a different role.
Hearing of the news, Matt Smith wished Peter ‘all the best’ and he left a special message for him saying: “I just say want to say good luck and good on you for getting it ‘cause I know he is a huge fan of the show and a really nice guy. The casting of it made me really excited and as a fan, I think it’ll be a hit. So good luck man, it’s going to be a thrill.”
Steven Moffat, the current showrunner of Doctor Who, might not be breaking any boundaries by casting Peter as The Doctor but we reckon he’s made a pretty good choice and we can’t wait to see what Peter will bring to the character.
